9. Switch Groups
welcome back to another video tutorial
for the pirate midi Bridge 6 and Bridge
4. today we're going to be taking a look
at switch groups which are really
powerful and allow you to do all sorts
of flexible control of your switch
groups and how they activate and when
they activate on my bridge 4 here I've
Switch Group Example
got switch groups set up for Bank zero I
have one switch group and I've added the
primary for switch one two three and
four and I've added the secondary for
switches one and two let me show you how
that's working so if I press switch 1 it
toggles switch one on and that means
I've sent all the mini messages that are
in the toggle on stack for switch one
however now when I press switch 2
switch one toggles off automatically and
switch two toggles on and so the toggle
off messages are sent from switch 1 and
the toggle on messages are sent from
switch 2 and the same happens when I do
switch 3 or switch 4 as you can see
these are exclusive some people might
call this preset mode other people might
call it snapshot mode basically it's
I think a more generic term would be
exclusive mode but we call them switch
groups which is the way you actually get
this to work I've also as I said put the
secondary switches in here so if I
actually long hold switch one that turns
off the primary toggle of switch one and
turns on the secondary toggle of switch
one and so I can press that and it will
actually toggle between the two so on a
bridge four you're effectively Having
Eight presets instantly available in One
bank and on the bridge six that would be
12. you can also have multiple switch
Multiple Switch Groups
groups on One bank so you can have
switches that are members of multiple
groups interacting in different ways
with other switches let me show you how
Setting Up a Group
it's set up let's go to our Bridge six
and we'll go to the switch groups menu
here you can see we have
eight groups
and that's for each bank and those
groups will be separate for each Bank
let's edit group one on this Bank there
are no group members but let's add one
you can add switch one primary switch
one secondary
etc etc and it helpfully shows you with
the LEDs which one you're selecting
with switch 2 primary for now
“Broadcast” Settings
here we have the broadcast settings that
means when you press this switch who
will it tell in this group so there's
transmit which means it will just send
its state it won't listen to the states
of any other switches and change based
on those Transmissions receive that
means when you press this switch it
won't tell any of the other switches in
this group it's state it's just being
activated on its own it will just listen
and act according to other switches and
when they are activated
or you can have both it can send its own
State and it will receive its own State
that's the default and all these
settings when you leave them in the
default state is how you get this
over here the basic preset exclusive
snapshot type mode
so you would just add the different
switch primary or secondary to the group
and leave all these other settings alone
and if that's all you want you can stop
watching the video now that's as easy as
it gets however if you want to do some
“Respond To” Settings
conditional switching or some
complicated interactions with over
multiple groups you can use these
respond to and response controls Now
respond to means that this switch if
it's receiving messages of the states of
other switches in the group you can tell
it what to do
so it will respond to if it receives an
on message so if another switch in the
group turns on it will respond in some
way but if that's which in the group
turns off then this switch doesn't care
about that it will ignore it the same
vice versa goes for off but on and off
as I said is the default then we have
“Response” Settings
the response settings now this means
when it hears one of these things what
will it do
so there's a few options off means you
no matter what any other switch is doing
if this switch learns about it it'll
turn itself off
same with on which is over here or means
it will just do the opposite
of what it's doing right now
and means it will copy what the other
switch did so if it receives an on
message this one will also turn on and
toggle just means no matter what state
this is in it will do the opposite of
what it's currently in I hope that makes
sense let me know if you have any
questions down below but we'll hopefully
get some good
Setting More Groups
examples here to show you so I've
deleted that and we're going to start a
group from scratch we're going to add
switch 1 primary with all the default
settings
then we're going to add another one
we're going to oops we're going to add
switch 3 primary and leave all the
default settings I'm going to add
another one to the group we're going to
add switch 5 primary and leave all the
default settings
and here's how it works one three five
three one pretty straightforward now
Adding a Second Group
what if I did another switch group we're
going to go to switch group 2 and edit
that I'm going to add
switch to primary
two primary
four primary
and switch six primary and now
you'll see that these
interact with each other but they don't
interact with this group so these three
switches are their own group and these
three switches are their own group
now let's change the settings a little
bit more
Demonstrating “AND” Response
now we'll go back to the switch groups
edit switch group one and we're going to
change the response of this switch to
and which means that when we go back out
here when I change switch 3 switch 1 is
going to turn on if I turn switch one
off
it's automatically turning everything
off because that's how it's supposed to
happen
but when I press switch 5 you can see
this one's going and it's also turning
on and it's also turning on that's how
you can remember and
Demonstrating “TOGGLE” Response
let's go back to switch groups edit
again change that response
to toggle and now you'll see that it
doesn't matter what this is on
it will just toggle
no matter what we're doing here this one
will just toggle on off on off on off it
just does the opposite of whatever its
current state is sometimes these groups
Planning Interactions
are a little hard to visualize without
having everything set up in front of you
so if you have any particular questions
about how you might Envision this
happening for your gear it's better to
think of an actual thing that you want
to do first before trying to set it up
if you try and understand these settings
completely abstractly you'll probably
find yourself not being able to come up
with a creative solution these features
are here to help you solve something
that you've got working in your head but
you don't know how to make it happen
all these settings will respond to and
response can seem a little bit technical
until you know exactly what you want to
happen
Outro
switch groups are really powerful and
it's hard to show it off without a whole
bunch of gear but I wanted to try and
keep it simple so that you can
understand the basics of how it works
and as I said earlier I know most people
are going to use this just for preset
mode like I showed on the bridge 4. but
if you have any questions about a
technical implementation of switch
groups please let us know you can
contact us through our Discord server or
on Facebook or via email or down in the
comments thanks very much for watching
we'll see you next time
